SHAPING THE WAY WE TEACH

Presentation by:

Presentation topic:

Pair Work \ Group Work

(based on Module # 4)

Summary:

I would like to brief you on my humble ideas about pair and group work, since I believe it is one of the best ways to stop being a “talking head” and provoke your students to work together, be more initiative to cooperate and… win!

The following tasks can be used in classes of practically all age groups (with certain alterations, of course); intermediate English language level; suitable for the first lesson with a new group. The teacher’s task here is to assist where\if necessary; provide objective judgment; facilitate the whole process.

Activity # 1.

Pair-Building

Let the students get in pairs.

For advanced groups ask the students to get in pairs according to certain principles,

for example finding a couple with some common feature in your names such as

-) starts with the same letter

-) finishes with the same letter

-) same quantity of letters \ syllables

-) same quantity of vowels \ consonants etc

As soon as a couple is ready, ask them to explain

the principle they used and the common feature found.

Activity # 2.

Get-to-Know Game: “Step in Togetherness”

Ask the students to sit in two rows back to back to each other.

Give every student a sheet of paper.

(If the students are not acquainted with each other, allow about 5 minutes of free talk on any topic in order to know each other better and get closer.)

Start asking questions in the following way:

Ask the right row about the person who is sitting back to him\her –

they write their answer.

Then ask the left row about the person who is sitting back to him\her –

they write their answer.

After you asked all the questions let the students talk and compare the results.

As a teacher you may also introduce an emulative element, for instance:

the winner is the couple who has more correctly guessed answers.

Possible questions:

1)    Which famous person would your friend like to meet?

2)    What magic power would your friend like to have?

3)    With what movie or literature character does your friend associates himself\herself?

4)    What animal would your friend like to be?

5)    Which quality in himself\herself does your friend value most of all?

6)    What thing would your friend take first from a burning house?

7)    Which animal would your friend like to have as a pet?

8)    What is your friend’s favorite kind of sport?

9)    What is your friend’s favorite musical instrument?

10)     What would be the first thing your friend would do if he\she becomes a person of the opposite sex?

11)    Continue the phrase as your friend would do that: “I would rather die than…”

Activity # 3.

ABC – game

Let the students get into groups of 3-4 people.

Give every group a task:

make an ABC of countries and \ or cities.

(Other possible topics: names of girls, names of boys, animals, birds, flowers etc.)

Set limited time, say 3 minutes, and see how far they can go; what strategies of group work they use. When the time is up, discuss both the results and the working strategies.

Activity # 4.

Countries’ Puzzle

This is a group activity too but it also has an emulative element.

(optional – let the students change the groups)

Here is a puzzle with a secret message made from the letters of the puzzle.

First, students have to unscramble each of the clue words;

Then copy the letters in the numbered cells to other cells with the same number and finally they will be able to read the secret message.

The team who can unscramble the final message first is the winner!
